Irrewarra Pinot Noir
Wine
By Farr Irrewarra Pinot Noir is sourced from a vineyard near the town of Irrewarra in western Victoria. The vineyard was planted in farming country by the Calvert family in 2001.
Irrewarra is an Aboriginal word meaning 'long spear throw', an apt description of both the flat western district landscape and the risk Nick Farr is taking with this wine.
The soils are a mixture of grey sandy clay loams and dark brown loams. Unirrigated, the vines are forced to reach deep into the soils for water, producing more intense grapes.
The fruit is shipped to the By Farr winery where it is destemmed and fermented as whole berries. The wine sees extended maceration. It matures in one third new French oak barrels.
Deep red, By Farr Irrewarra Pinot Noir is earthy with powerful red fruit flavours, its tannins finely woven through to the finish. Cellaring potential is 10 years.
